Kibale Forest National Park – The Primate Capital

Our Advice: The Kibale permit is the most expensive because it offers the highest success rate and the most diverse primate experience. If budget is a concern, we recommend Kalinzu or Budongo, which offer excellent value at half the price.

The Trekking Experience: What Actually Happens

The Briefing (Day 1, 6:00 AM)

Your day begins before dawn. At the park headquarters, you’ll join a briefing led by a Uganda Wildlife Authority ranger. This isn’t just a formality, it’s where you receive your assignment for the day.

Guide’s insider tip: “The ranger will assign you to a specific chimpanzee family based on your fitness level and preferences. For example, if you’re a photographer, we’ll try to place you in a group tracking a family that spends more time on the ground, offering better photo opportunities.”

The Trek (2-5 Hours)

Once briefed, you’ll head into the forest with your guide and trackers. Chimps don’t stay in one place—they move constantly in search of fruit. Your trek can last anywhere from 1 to 6 hours.

The Hour With the Chimps

Once located, you’ll have one hour with the habituated chimpanzee family. This is your time to observe their behaviors:

The Best Time for Chimpanzee Trekking in 2027/2028

You can trek chimpanzees year-round, but for the best experience, the dry seasons are unbeatable.
