Packing list for gorilla trekking

Gorilla Trekking Permit and Identification

The first and most critical item to carry is your gorilla trekking permit. Without it, you won’t be able to join the trek. Make sure to have a printed or electronic copy of your permit, along with a valid identification document, such as your passport. A gorilla Permit in for Uganda can be purchased directly via the URA portal or with the help of your travel agent. Foreign non residents can get a permit at 700USD, 600USD, and 250,000ugx for East African citizens.

Sturdy Hiking Boots

Gorilla trekking often involves traversing rugged, muddy, and uneven terrain. A pair of sturdy, waterproof hiking boots with good ankle support is crucial to keep your feet comfortable and protected.

Appropriate Clothing

Choose lightweight, moisture-wicking clothing that covers your arms and legs to protect against thorns, insects, and sunburn. Layering is advisable, as weather conditions can change rapidly in forested areas. Consider packing the following:

  • Long-sleeved shirts
  • Lightweight, breathable pants
  • Fleece or insulating layer for cooler moments
  • Rain jacket or poncho for sudden downpours
  • Hat with a brim to shield your face from sun and rain

Backpack

A small, comfortable daypack is essential for carrying your essentials. It should be big enough to hold water, snacks, a camera, and personal items like sunscreen and insect repellent.

Snacks

High-energy snacks such as energy bars, nuts, and dried fruits will help keep you fueled during the trek. Gorilla treks can last several hours, so having a quick energy boost is essential.

Gloves

Lightweight gloves can protect your hands from thorns, branches, and other rough vegetation, ensuring a more comfortable trek.

Insect Repellent

Gorilla trekking takes you into the heart of the forest, where insects are prevalent. Use a high-quality insect repellent to protect yourself from mosquitoes and other biting insects.

Sunscreen and Hat

Guard against the sun’s rays by applying sunscreen and wearing a wide-brimmed hat. Even in the shade of the forest, the UV exposure can be significant, especially at higher altitudes.

Camera and Binoculars

To capture the incredible moments and to observe wildlife from a distance, bring a camera with a good zoom lens and image stabilization. Binoculars are also handy for observing gorillas and other wildlife without disturbing them.

Basic First Aid Kit

Pack a basic first aid kit containing band-aids, pain relievers, antiseptic wipes, and any personal medications you may require. It’s always better to be prepared for minor injuries or discomfort.
