Best Time To Travel:
The best time to visit Tsavo West National Park is during the dry seasons, from June to October and January to February. These months offer the best wildlife viewing conditions, as animals gather around water sources and the vegetation is less dense, making them easier to spot. The weather is also more comfortable, with clear skies and minimal rainfall, which is ideal for game drives and photography.
How To Get There:
Travelling by road, the park is about 240 km from Nairobi via the A109 (Mombasa–Nairobi Highway). This journey typically takes 4 to 5 hours, depending on traffic and weather conditions.
You’ll enter through entry points such as Mtito Andei or the Chyulu gate, both well sign-posted and accessible.
If you’re short on time or prefer a smoother ride, a domestic flight from Wilson Airport (NBO) in Nairobi to Tsavo West’s airstrips like Kilaguni, Finch Hattons, or Kamboyo takes around 45 to 60 minutes.
Charter or scheduled flights (via AirKenya, Safarilink, or Mombasa Air Safari) are typically arranged through your lodge or safari operator for a seamless transfer.
About Tsavo East and West National Parks
Together, Tsavo East and West form Kenya’s largest protected wilderness, covering more than 20,000 square kilometers. Located in the southeast between Nairobi and Mombasa, the Tsavo parks are known for their dramatic scenery, red-dust elephants, and rugged, less-tamed feel.
Tsavo East is famous for large herds of elephants rolling in red soil and the beautiful Galana River. Wildlife here includes lions, leopards, giraffes, gazelles, and over 500 bird species. The wide-open spaces and relative remoteness appeal to those seeking an off-the-beaten-path safari. Tsavo West is more varied in landscape, with volcanic hills, lava flows, and lush oases like Mzima Springs, where you can see hippos and crocodiles through an underwater viewing chamber.
