Combining Gorilla Trekking and Grumeti River crossings in June and July

Plan a Combined Gorilla Trekking and Great Migration Safari in June and July | Track Gorillas In Bwindi or Volcanoes and Witness the Grumeti River Crossings in Western Serengeti

June and July are when the migration hits its first real river obstacle, that is the Grumeti in the Serengeti’s Western Corridor. It’s overshadowed by the Mara River crossings that follow it in August and September, but that’s exactly the appeal: smaller crowds, lower rates and crossings that are, by most accounts, just as tense: narrower channels, thick riverine forest and some of the largest Nile crocodiles in Africa waiting in water calmer-looking than it is.

What to Expect During the Grumeti Crossings

By June, the main body of the migration has pushed out of the central Serengeti and into the Western Corridor, gathering on the Grumeti’s southern bank before the first animals commit to crossing. The Grumeti itself is a different kind of obstacle than the Mara: often a series of disconnected pools rather than one continuous flow, narrower, more wooded and generally calmer-looking right up until a crossing actually starts. That mix of hidden tension and abrupt drama, combined with visibly fewer vehicles at any given crossing point, is what regularly draws travelers back to the Western Corridor over the busier northern circuit.

The trade-off is scale: Grumeti crossings tend to be smaller and more fragmented than the Mara’s, so if raw scale is what you’re after, August and September remain the stronger choice. If atmosphere and exclusivity matter more, June and July are arguably the better trip.

Gorilla Trekking and Grumeti River Crossing

How to Move Between Gorilla Trekking and the Grumeti Crossings in Western Serengeti

If starting with gorillas: fly into Kigali, trek in Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park ($1500 per person) or proceed to Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable National Park ($800 perperson), then fly to Kilimanjaro and connect to the Western Corridor typically via a scheduled light-aircraft flight from Arusha into an airstrip serving the western Serengeti (such as Grumeti or Kirawira), since the western corridor is remote enough that a road transfer from Arusha would eat most of a day.

If starting with Serengeti: fly into Kilimanjaro, base yourself in the Western Corridor for the crossings, then fly to Kigali or Entebbe to close with gorilla trekking.

How Many Days to Plan for a Combined Gorilla Trekking and Grumeti River Crossing Safari

10 to 12 days: 3 to 4 days for gorillas, a transfer day, and 4 to 5 days in the Western Corridor. Crossing timing here is genuinely unpredictable: herds can hold at the riverbank for up to two weeks before committing, so more nights in the area meaningfully improve your odds over a short stopover.

A Sample 14 Days Combined Uganda Gorilla Trekking and Grumeti River Crossing Safari Itinerary

Days 1–3: Kibale Forest, Uganda

Arrival at Entebbe, transfer to Kibale, settle in, then a morning of chimpanzee tracking.

Days 4–6: Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Uganda

Transfer south to Bwindi, your gorilla trekking day, then a rest day.

Day 7: Transfer to Kigali, Rwanda and Fly to Kilimanjaro

Cross via Cyanika into Rwanda and continue to Kigali International Airport, Fly to Kilimanjaro and Transfer to Arusha.

Day 8: Bush Flight From Arusha to the Western Corridor

A scheduled light-aircraft flight into an airstrip serving the Grumeti area, positioning you close to the crossing points without the long road transfer.

Days 9–11: Western Corridor and the Grumeti River (3 Nights)

Full days focused on the crossing points, plus the Western Corridor’s own resident wildlife: hippo pods, strong leopard and lion populations and some of the region’s largest Nile crocodiles.

Day 12: Ngorongoro Crater (1 Night)

A transfer east toward Ngorongoro, a longer drive than from the southern Serengeti. A full day on the crater floor follows.

Day 13-14: Tarangire National Park (1 Night), Then Departure

A shorter final stop in Tarangire for its elephant herds and baobab landscape, or transfer directly to Kilimanjaro/Arusha for departure if time is tight.

If you’d rather have a river crossing mostly to yourself than share one with a long line of vehicles, June and July are worth serious consideration over the more famous months that follow. Tell us your dates and we’ll route the trip around the Western Corridor’s window.

Where to Stay

Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda

For a mid-luxury base, Ingagi Park View Lodge is the go-to. Moving up a tier, Sambora Lodge is the normal-luxury option. At the very top end, One&Only, Bisate Lodge and Singita Kwitonda and Kataza House all offer an ultra-luxury stay near the park.

Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Uganda

Four Gorillas Lodge covers the mid-luxury tier here. For normal luxury, Buhoma Lodge, Nkuringo Gorilla Lodge and Kiho Gorilla Safari Lodge are all strong options depending on which sector you’re trekking from. At the ultra-luxury end, Gorilla Forest Lodge is the standout.

Western Serengeti / Grumeti

Lahia Tented Lodge is the mid-luxury pick for this stretch of the corridor. Normal-luxury options are thinner on the ground here than in other parts of the Serengeti, neither Lemala nor Karibu Camps currently operates a property in the Western Corridor, so it’s worth confirming availability with other operators for this specific tier. At the ultra-luxury end, though, this is Singita’s actual home turf: Singita Grumeti’s private reserve holds Sasakwa Lodge (hilltop, the most traditional of the three), Faru Faru Lodge (more contemporary, overlooking the Grumeti River), and Sabora Tented Camp (a 1920s-explorer-style tented camp) all genuinely well-suited to this leg, unlike the Ngorongoro or central Serengeti sections below.

The Difficult Parts to Know About

Crossing timing is the real uncertainty here: herds can gather at the riverbank for up to two weeks before the first animals commit and there’s no way to predict the exact day in advance. The Western Corridor is also genuinely remote: fewer camps and lodges operate here year-round compared to the central and northern Serengeti and some are mobile, seasonal camps that only set up to follow the migration during this window.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Grumeti crossing as dramatic as the Mara crossing?

Smaller in scale, but many repeat Serengeti visitors describe it as more intimate and less crowded: a real trade-off rather than a lesser version of the same thing.

Not Really. June/July are still part of the high season though camps are considerably easier to book without the 12-to-18-month lead time the Mara crossing season requires.

Only with a longer, multi-stop Serengeti itinerary, since the herds move from the Western Corridor toward the north over June and July, a trip spanning both would need to track that movement rather than staying in one place, which usually means 3+ weeks total including the gorilla trekking leg.
